Horseback in Florida: Beach Rides, Trail Ranches and Farm Days

Florida gets read as beaches and theme parks and not much else, which misses the whole second state inland: oak hammocks, pine flatwoods, cattle country and a surprising number of working horse ranches that take visitors. One honest note before the list. Our data records what each ranch offers and how to reach it. It does not record rider weight limits or minimum ages, and those are the two things a ranch cares about most. Ask before you book, and ask specifically if you are bringing children.

The beach ride: Amelia Island

Amelia Island Horseback Riding, at 97081 Meadowbrook Ln in Fernandina Beach, runs guided rides along the beaches and through the maritime forests of Amelia Island State Park. Our listing describes a 60-minute beach ride through the dunes and along the Atlantic shoreline, with helmets provided and no riding experience needed, and it notes that the sunset rides are the ones that book weeks ahead.

Northeast Florida

• Haile Equestrian, 7680 SW 46 Blvd, Gainesville. Lessons, camps and trail rides in the Haile Plantation area; the listing suggests calling or booking online.
• Meant to Be Equestrian, Double Gate Rd, St. Augustine. Lessons and rides near the coast, run as a small operation, so call ahead.
• Jacksonville Equestrian Center, 13611 Normandy Blvd. The city's public equestrian venue, with arenas and stabling, and the host of shows and rodeos. Check its calendar for what is open to the public.

Tampa Bay and the Nature Coast

• Ruxton's Ranch Rides, 6396 86th Ave, Pinellas Park. Guided trail rides, pony rides and lessons, minutes from Tampa Bay.
• 3 Sisters and a Dude Horse Ranch, 9352 Bahia Loop, Land O' Lakes. Guided rides through oak hammocks, plus pony rides and farm tours in Pasco County.
• Blazing Saddles Ranch, 10219 Wirt Rd, Dade City. Trail rides, pony rides and farm animal interactions in east Pasco County.
• In the Breeze Ranch, 7514 Gardner Rd, Tampa. Family-run, with wooded trail rides, pony rides and farm animal encounters in northwest Hillsborough.
• Rockin' Horse Farm, 8118 Plathe Rd, New Port Richey. Boarding, lessons and trail riding in western Pasco County.
• Midnight Skye Ranch, 14450 Bellamy Brothers Blvd, Dade City. A Paso Fino ranch offering trail rides, lessons and horse shows.
• Circle C's Ranch, 602 Duque Rd, Lutz, and Emmet's Ranch & Equestrian Center, 19131 Huckavalle Rd, Odessa. Both are lesson-and-boarding operations on the Hillsborough-Pasco line, which is the right call if you want to learn to ride rather than ride once.

Central Florida

• Lazy H Ranch Trail Rides, 2120 Macy Island Rd, Kissimmee. Family-run guided rides through oak hammocks and along the shore of Lake Toho, minutes from the theme-park corridor, with gentle horses for beginners.
• Cactus Jack's Trail Rides & Farm Tours, 11100 SW 16th Ave, Ocala. Guided rides through Marion County horse country plus farm tours, described in our listing as friendly for first-timers.
• Giraffe Ranch, 38650 Mickler Rd, Dade City, sits in this part of the world too, but it is a wildlife safari rather than a riding stable, which is worth knowing if you searched for a ranch and found a giraffe.

Southwest Florida

• Deer Prairie Creek Horseback Riding, 7001 Forbes Trail, Venice. Guided rides through the pine flatwoods, prairies and creek crossings of Deer Prairie Creek Preserve in Sarasota County.
• Gregory Ranch, 8401 Henderson Grade, North Fort Myers. Guided rides through oak hammocks on a small operation our listing describes as a local favourite for birthdays and first rides.
• Florida Everglades Equestrian Center, 10811 Strike Ln, Bonita Springs. Riding lessons, boarding, equine vaulting and special events, minutes from the Everglades preserve.
• American Cream Stables, 16210 Saddlewood Ln, Cape Coral. Trail riding and riding experiences in Cape Coral.

The Panhandle

• Rustic Trail Stable, 4645 Rustic Tr, Milton. Lessons, boarding and guided trail rides through Blackwater River country, with first-timers welcome.
• Sunshine Riding Trails, 2243 Rolling Pines Rd, Chipley. Family-run rides through rolling pine and pasture country. This is the one listing of ours that states an age rule, and it is worth quoting exactly: riders under 12 ride with a guide on lead.

South Florida

• Bar-B-Ranch, 3500 SW 121st Ave, Davie. A working ranch in Broward County offering guided trail rides, pony rides and lessons through South Florida ranch country.
• A&A Adventure Horse Trail Rides, 2764 SW 83rd Ave, Miramar. Western trail rides through farmland and woods, plus pony rides and lessons.

Before you book

• Ask about rider weight limits and minimum ages. Our listings do not carry them, and they vary by ranch and by horse.
• Ask how long the ride actually is, and whether helmets are provided or you bring your own.
• Ask whether you can be matched to a horse that suits your size and experience, and flag any injury, pregnancy or back problem when you book rather than on the day.
• Nobody in our listings publishes a standing rate: the rows say to call or check the ranch's own site, so treat any price quoted elsewhere as out of date.
